[Vegan Mofo] Good Enough To Eat - Kaia House & Apple Cider Vinegar

You know I love a good scrub - pair that with a mask and I am sold. I picked up 'new skin exfoliating mask' by Kaia House from a coupon deal. I tried it over the weekend and here are my thoughts. I scooped a bit out, the scent is lemon custard like and the texture reminds me of dried rice in Vegenaise - odd but not so odd feeling. The mask felt cool and refreshing - I need to use it some more to see any more benefits - this was a quick trail run.

More of a DIY beauty person. Well - read on!

So I use a lot of hair spray and straitening gel on my hair - these can leave a gross buildup on your strands and dull the shine. For the last month I have been using apple cider vinegar to degunk my hair! 1 part ACV (I say like 3 tablespoons) to 2 parts water. Place all of this in a plastic bottle or cup/mix or shake and hop in the shower. After shampooing your hair pour the mix over your scalp and rub it in for a few minutes - keep your eyes closed - this stuff can burn them! Rinse your hair and move onto conditioner. My hair is so shiny after doing this! Don't worry about the smell - your strands do not stink afterwards!

[Vegan Mofo] Keepin' It Local - Sonora - Murpheys

Last Saturday my boyfriend Matt had one of the music videos he directed shown at Itsa Film Festival in Sonora, CA. Sonora is in the 209 area code and an hour away and we never head out to the mountains so we were looking forward to it.

As you can see Matt does not like taking photos - I was going to glue him in place by the sign! The film festival was divided into blocks - we stayed for his block and went then went for lunch 30 minutes away at Mineral in Murphy's, CA.

To get to our lunch destination we went up through the mountains - long winding roads. Nature like this is so breathtaking - it is scary, I had to breathe a lot and take a shot of my stress relief inhaler so I would not get a panic attack. I ended up getting car sick - or car nauseated for the first time ever on this trip!

We had to go over a bridge - the water looked amazing but large bodies of water freak me out - so I just clicked away as Matt drove. We wanted to stop and take photos but did not know if we were allowed to pull over...Maybe next time!

When we got to Murphy's it was packed - there was a wine festival going on and every shop was serving wine! I read that a grape stomp was going on but did not expect a huge crowed for such a small mountain town. We found parking - walked along the vendor packed street - looked at some shops and made our way to Mineral.

Let me start off with a cocktail (in this case: The Aphrodisiac; Hibiscus flower, coriander, anise, ginger, bubbles - Matt had Brasserie Dupont Foret Organic Saison Ale) and a note: Mineral has been on my radar for over a year - but I did not see the point of traveling 90 minutes to a small mountain town for fancy vegan food - I see the point now!

We were greeted and the menu was explained (vegan options) - the house made bread and spread was divine - the bread was so light and airy - bread pillow with a touch of chunky sea salt on top - mmmm! They even brought out large carafes of mint infused water. Minereal is a vegetarian restaurant but we learned most of the menu could be made vegan!

I settled on the Mineral Burger - I did not know what to expect but I figure a restaurant gets high marks if they can do a good vegan burger. My burger arrived and I took a bite - and was so wowed! It had a smokey taste to it that I have never tasted before - it tasted like it took years to perfect (and word has it - it did!), the aioli was rich but did not over power the yummy bun or patty. The chips and picked veggies added a nice kick.

Matt decided on the Hawillian Land Scallops. They were tofu based and had a nice texture and the plating was very pretty. There was no fishy taste or anything trying to replicate animal protein on both of our plates.

We finished it off with House Made Peanut Butter Chocolate Truffles. They tasted like grown up peanut butter cups, slightly bitter chocolate with slightly sweet peanut butter - perfect sized truffles you wanted to roll around on your tongue!

After an awesome lunch we had a few minutes to spare before heading back to the film festival. We wondered into Tea an' Tiques which had a lot of fair trade and organic varieties of teas in a country setting. I picked up a few tea packets to try out (and review) - if I had more time I would have loved to look at all the teas in the store. I had to taste some wine during the festival so I tried a few of Chiarella's red after finding out they were vegan friendly (not filtered with animal bits) and we went on our way...

It was a fun day up in the mountains - we would love to go back and explore more!

I Love Halloween Fabric

I really enjoy fabric shopping - but I love fabric shopping at this time of year. I love finding skull fabric and dia de los muertos fabric! This year not a lot has come out, but I did find some new stuff and raided my massive fabric bin. Here is some creepy cute bows in my shop using some of my fabric finds!

SebaMed Face and Body Wash

I picked up a giant bottle of SebaMed at Costco last week - because I needed a new face wash to take off my makeup at night. I am always hunting for vegan products and was happy to score a giant bottle for $15. I will not need face wash for awhile now!

The smell is very clean , like hospital sanitizer clean, the color is Slime green and it leaves my face clean and not dry or filmy feeling. I like that my skin feels clean and not itchy after using it - like some face washes.

Yay for finding vegan things at Costco besides the usual stuff! Link

Tea Time - What I Have Been Sipping On

I have been going a bit tea crazy these last few weeks. My usual green tea in the morning and night time sleepy blend have been replaced. I blame Cost Plus for having great varities. You go in to look at their retro inspired Halloween stuff and walk out with a bag full of tea and a sugar skull wind chime!

I first saw Red Velvet Chocolate by The Republic of Tea in the current issue of Veg News and wanted to try it right away but was having a hard time finding it...Well, I found it and have been drinking it daily! It is kinda chocolatey, very smooth and tasty. I serve it with a bit of stevia and plain almond milk. This is like hot chocolate for those that like the drink but do not like how rich it is.Zhena's Gypsy Tea has some new chai flavors out - they even say vegan on the tube (I know when I think chai - I think honey which is not vegan - duh!). I like them all, prepared with the same method as above. They are spicy and sweet, comfort in a cup!

What tea are you drinking? Also what can I do with all these tube tins that are stacking up!?!

Cafeteria Flashback - Hamburger Gravy & Mashed Potatoes

In school my lunches usually consisted of a brown bag/lunch box lunch. If I was lucky it meant mom made it - not so lucky my dad made it and my pb&j was more like a pb&j puddle with soggy bread in a baggy. The occasions I did eat a cafeteria meal one thing stuck out over the years and that was hamburger gravy with mashed potatoes. My mom said this was a fave of hers too and Matt never had it - so ya know I had to veganize this classic!

Vegan Hamburger Gravy With Mashed Potatoes
1 package faux ground meat (I use Trader Joe's crumbles)
a bit of oil for the pan
1 package of vegan instant mashed potatoes*
1 tablespoon of soy sour cream

Prepare the gravey mix according to instructions adding an extra 1/4 cup water. Brown crumbles in oil. When the gravy is done add it to the crumbles in the pan on low heat. Make the mashed potatoes via the box instructions then stir in sour cream. Place a big glob of mashed potatoes on your plate, my a dent and fill with hamburger gravy and enjoy! It came pretty close to what I remember from grade school!

*I think that a boxed mix makes the dish more authentic tasting. If you want try making mashed potatoes from scratch - it is up to you!
